Cirque du Soleil to play World Arena Jan. 12-16

Colorado Springs, Colo. (August 3, 2010) - Cirque du Soleil is pleased to announce that the critically-acclaimed touring production Alegría will perform at the Colorado Springs World Arena for eight performances Jan. 12, 16, 2011. Tickets will go on sale to the public Monday, Aug. 16 at 10:00 AM at all ticket outlets.

Alegría is a Cirque du Soleil classic and an internationally acclaimed production that has entertained more than 10 million people worldwide since its world premiere in Montreal in 1994. In May 2009, Alegría embarked on a new journey, performing the same mesmerizing production, but now in arenas in North America, giving more people the opportunity to enjoy a Cirque du Soleil show in their own town.

Colorado Springs, Colo. (July 28, 2010) - MSG Entertainment (MSGE) announced today a nationwide kickoff to the holiday season as the world-famous Radio City Rockettes “Kick Across America” in celebration of the 2010 Radio City Christmas Spectacular. On Thursday, August 12 the Rockettes will kick coast-to-coast in eight of the 26 cities in which the Christmas Spectacular will play this season. No matter where you are, either in-person or on-line, you can participate in spreading the magic of the Christmas Spectacular as our coast-to-coast kick-line will benefit deserving families.

This year, for the first time, MSGE will expand their annual “Christmas in August” event outside of New York to include a select number of cities where the 2010 Arena tour will stop this holiday season - New York, Los Angeles, Colorado Springs, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Wichita, San Diego and Fresno. The “Christmas in August” festivities will kick off in New York City at 1:30PM eastern and will continue at the same time across the country in the other participating markets (specific city event times and locations listed further below) immediately following. Colorado Springs residents are encouraged to join in the festivities at 12:00 Noon at Colorado Springs World Arena and kick up their heels with this legendary dance company. The Showcase at Studio Bee series returns this month with Andy Tanner and The Changing Colors 6:00 PM July 15 for a free concert in the Showcase at Studio Bee. Studio Bee is located on the east side of the Pikes Peak Center, 190 S. Cascade Ave., in Colorado Springs. This concert is free (no ticket required) and open to the public. Photos of these bands are attached to this email. MP3 files of these performers' songs are available upon request.

The Showcase at Studio Bee highlights the best of local artists performing original music. The July 15 concert is part of this monthly concert series presented free of charge to the public in collaboration with KRCC, COPPeR, the Independent, the Gazette and the Pikes Peak Center . Artists included in the Showcase are homegrown talent from El Paso, Teller and Pueblo counties, have produced an album and write their own music.

ABOUT ANDY TANNER (6:00 PM): Andy Tanner was one of the first artists to perform in the Showcase at Studio Bee in October of 2008 and we're proud to welcome him back for an encore performance. In summer 2008, Andy Tanner released “Suitcase Full of Air,” an 11-track disc described as half dark piano pop, half post-punk medium core. Tanner is best known regionally for his seven-year stint as singer-songwriter for the band Laymen Terms.

ABOUT THE CHANGING COLORS (6:45PM) : The tiny hamlet of Manitou Springs, Colorado sits just below the soaring heights of Pikes Peak. A place frequented by thousands of tourists each year, it is a Mecca for flatlanders and southerners longing for the cool mountain air and the remarkable views. It is also a haven for gifted songwriters and musicians. Among the most capable of these writers is Conor Bourgal, who along with his twin brother, Ian, and an interchangeable ensemble of musicians, form a group called the Changing Colors.

It is the surrounding mountains that inform the Color’s music and lend them it’s spiritual resonance. They are a band that sings of longing and beauty, hope and regret. Their latest album, Ghost of Red Mountain takes its entire theme from the legendary story of Manitou resident Emma Crawford. Sometime in the early 1900's Crawford’s coffin was washed down onto Main Street from it’s perch above town on Red Mountain. The story is the source of Manitou’s biggest festival – the internationally renowned Emma Crawford Coffin Races held each Halloween. Bourgal chose to look beyond the gothic story and to bring a hardscrabble pioneer woman’s life to light.

The Colors' style remains accessible in its similarity to folk and Americana, but it’s substance is far more complex. Bourgal’s songs paint a landscape of the human journey through fear and despair into ultimate freedom and spiritual release. Each song on the album forms a particular scene in the narrative, moving toward ultimate transcendence. A recurring theme is separation – usually of lovers – and the passage through the anxiety and anguish of withdrawal. This experience is often examined from both perspectives – the one leaving and the one left behind. The ultimate theme is the transformation of the human spirit through acceptance of one’s migration through ordeal to triumph. Finally, the listener is left with a feeling of ascendancy and tranquility.

Since their first show in June 2008, The Changing Colors have played over 100 shows in 7 states.

Be a resident and active in the "music communities" of El Paso, Pueblo or Teller counties for at least 12 months

Submit recordings of radio quality

Have an online presence or be willing to institute a website, MySpace or Peak Radar profile

Submitted tracks must be free of any obscenities

Music must appeal to a broad base of musical tastes.

About The Judds

Kentucky natives, The Judds, are one of the most successful country music duos of all time – amassing fourteen number-one hits and over 60 industry awards including multiple CMA, ACM and GRAMMY awards. After launching their career with RCA Records in 1984, The Judds sold 20 million albums in just 6 short years. By 1989, The Judds were one of the top-grossing and most popular touring acts in America. But at the height of their career, Naomi Judd announced she would have to retire from the music business due to health complications. To say goodbye to their fans, they launched the 116-city Judds Farewell Tour selling more concert tickets than anyone that year with the exception of The Grateful Dead and The Rolling Stones. The Pikes Peak Center is excited to welcome American rock musician Chris Isaak to the Pikes Peak Center Sunday, September 19, 2010. Doors for this performance will open at 6:00 PM with the concert starting at 7:00 PM. Hi-res images available upon request.

Isaak has been described as the “rockabilly rebel,” “broken-hearted crooner” and an “acoustic storyteller.” Chris Isaak entered the music scene in 1985 with his debut album Silvertone, followed by Chris Isaak and Heart-Shaped World. He has released nine albums with the highly-anticipated release of his first original album in seven years, Mr. Lucky. He also recently released Chris Isaak Live at The Fillmore on June 15. Colorado Springs, Colo. (June 21, 2010): The Pikes Peak Center is proud to welcome multi-platinum country artist Josh Turner in concert August 6 at 8:00 PM. Doors for this concert open at 7:00PM with the concert starting at 8:00 PM.

Since earning a standing ovation as an unknown singer on the Grand Ole Opry stage in 2001 with his distinctive deep-voiced delivery of “Long Black Train,” Turner has established himself as one of the most identifiable male vocalists in country music. Blender magazine has even called Josh “a country Barry White. His burring voice can tease our sensuality in unlikely places.”

Turner has sold more than 4 million albums and garnered two multi-week No. 1s (“Your Man” and “Would You Go With Me”). His debut album was certified platinum for more than 1 million copies sold, and his sophomore album, Your Man, was one of only four country albums to reach double-platinum status in 2006. The Showcase at Studio Bee series returns after a month hiatus with Christian rockers Polaradio and winner of The Gazette's "Best Original Band 2010" garage rock/alt-country band The Lo-Fi Cowboys 6:00 PM June 17 for a free concert in the Showcase at Studio Bee. Studio Bee is located on the east side of the Pikes Peak Center, 190 S. Cascade Ave., in Colorado Springs. This concert is free (no ticket required) and open to the public. The Showcase at Studio Bee highlights the best of local artists performing original music. The June 17 concert is part of this monthly concert series presented free of charge to the public in collaboration with KRCC, COPPeR, the Independent, the Gazette and the Pikes Peak Center . Artists included in the Showcase are homegrown talent from El Paso, Teller and Pueblo counties, have produced an album and write their own music.

Gary Allan has announced his plan to extend “Get Off on the Pain Tour,” with the tour picking up again on Sept.16 in Salt Lake City, Utah before he makes his way to the Colorado Springs World Arena Sept. 18. He’ll hit more than 30 markets in North American before the end of the year.

The first leg of the tour included sold out shows across the nation including: Los Angeles, Nashville, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston and New Orleans. After a huge first run, Allan and his team couldn’t pass up a chance to build upon their successes.

“The first leg of the tour concentrated on intimate venues I’d always wanted to headline, like The Fillmore and The Ryman,” Allan said. “On the next leg of the tour we are going to bigger arenas and amphitheaters. Since forming in 1986, the Goo Goo Dolls have evolved from a scrappy punk-influenced trio into the platinum-selling, chart-topping act behind such radio staples as "Name," "Iris," "Slide," and "Here is Gone." Along the way, founding members John Rzeznik and Robby Takac left Buffalo, N.Y. for Los Angeles, but Rzeznik soon found that L.A. isn't everything it's cracked up to be.

"I wasn't really feeling any kind of real inspiration in Los Angeles," he admits. "I was sitting here just beating my head against the wall trying to write songs and I wasn't feeling inspired at all." The quest to rekindle his muse led Rzeznik to pack his recording gear and guitars in a U-Haul truck and drive across country to his hometown. He met his band mates Robby Takac and drummer Mike Malinin set up shop in a 100-year-old Masonic Ballroom.

The Goo Goo Dolls also have put in plenty of work and not only survived but also thrived over two decades, a milestone that hasn't gone unnoticed by the band. "One of the things that we've managed to do - as simply put as possible – is stay together," Takac says. "That's awfully difficult for a lot of bands." For Let Love In, Rzeznik and Takac renewed their writing partnership. "John and I wrote together on this record," Takac says. "We had done some stuff lyrically together, but the last time we actually wrote completely together on Superstar CarWash."

Listening to Let Love In - recorded with acclaimed producer Glen Ballard - it's apparent that Rzeznik isn't only sharing his own feelings, he's tapped into consciousness to such an extent that some of the Goo Goo Dolls' songs have become anthems. Take "Better Days" for example, a song from Let Love In with such power and empathy it was adopted by CNN as an anthem of sorts for the recovery efforts following Hurricane Katrina.

"I was just looking at the situation in the world," Rzeznik says of the song. "Fear makes people do frightening things. Fear is a catalyst for selfishness and war. Sometimes I fear that we're losing our ability to reason. I needed some hope to hang onto. That's why I wrote 'Better Days'". "Let's just hit the reset button," he says. "Let's say I'm sorry and start over again. That was basically the message. Something better is going to come." With that hope, the Goo Goo Dolls have offered Let Love In, a rare work of naked honesty and emotion in songs that will stick in your head for the weeks, months, and years to come.

The Showcase at Studio Bee series returns next week with Tango Red Tapestry and Palmer Divide in the April 8 Showcase at Studio Bee inside Studio Bee at the Pikes Peak Center, 190 S. Cascade Ave., in Colorado Springs. This concert is free (no ticket required) and open to the public. Hi-res photos and MP3 files of these performers' songs are available upon request.

The Showcase at Studio Bee highlights the best of local artists performing original music. The April 8 concert is part of this monthly concert series presented free of charge to the public in collaboration with KRCC, COPPeR, the Independent, the Gazette and the Pikes Peak Center . Artists included in the Showcase are homegrown talent from El Paso, Teller and Pueblo counties, have produced an album and write their own music.

ABOUT TANGO RED TAPESTRY (6:00 PM): Formed in 2007, Tango Red Tapestry started making music simply for the fun of it and in 2009 released The Window, a 5 song EP that shows the diverse musical offerings that Tango Red Tapestry embodies. Comprised of Brian Eastin, Danny Snyder, Chris Combs and Jordan Beck, the group plans to release a full length album and tour in the near future.

ABOUT PALMER DIVIDE (6:45 PM): Palmer Divide formed as a band in 2004 with the single goal of not being another acoustic cover band. With their own approach to music they offer up an original flavor of acoustic music with well crafted lyrics, innovative instrumentation, and solid 3 part harmonies. Their unique yet familiar sound pulls from their deep respect of traditional bluegrass music and well as their desire to create a modern acoustic voice that is their own.

Individually their resumes include such highlights as; multiple performances at the White House, the Grand Ole Opry, and The Nashville Network. Awards include winning the SPBGMA Mandolin Player of the Year, the Deer Creek Fiddlers Convention Dobro competition, and the Rockygrass Bluegrass Band competition with Black Rose. Palmer Divide's featured songwriter, Jody Adams, has tunes being featured on CMT, MTV, Access Hollywood, A&E, Fox Sports, the WB Network, ESPN, as well as, having written the theme song for Bill Bennett's Radio Show ”Morning in America”. Several of his songs have also been featured on NBC’s hit “Friday Night Lights.”

Collectively they have appearing in both Bluegrass Unlimited and Bluegrass Now magazines, and have had two of their Prime Cuts of Bluegrass singles worked into daily rotation on Sirius/XM's Bluegrass Junction. They were as "In-Studio" feature band on Sirius/XM Studios Bluegrass Junction with Kyle Cantrell for the month of December. "Red Dirt on My Shoes" peaked at #3 for most spins on Bluegrass Junctions Most Played Songs. "Eye of the Storm" also finished #3 in the Bluegrass Radio Programmers poll. They have had 4 different songs place in the top 5 of the Bluegrass Radio Programmers poll in 2008. In addition, they were one of 4 bands selected to perform at the Huck Finn Jubilees' National Bluegrass Playoffs.

Synchronized skating is a popular discipline both within U. S. Figure Skating and around the world. U.S. Figure Skating held its first national championships in 1984 and also hosted the inaugural World Synchronized Skating Championships in 2000.

Synchronized skating is a team sport in which 16 athletes perform a program together. It uses the same judging system as singles, pairs and dance, and is characterized by teamwork, speed, intricate formations and challenging step sequences. As with the other disciplines, all teams perform a short program and a free skate with required well-balanced program elements.

CHRISTMAS WREATH GONE AWRY CREATES OPPORTUNITY FOR ARENA

COLORADO SPRINGS WORLD ARENA GETS A NEW SIGN ON BUILDING

Colorado Springs, Colo. (March 25, 2010) – The Colorado Springs World Arena unveiled a new sign on the north face of the facility this week. Built in 1998, The World Arena building originally had no sign attached to it. However, the side of the building was damaged by a Christmas wreath that scraped several aluminum panels on the side of the venue. While deciding how to fix the damage, “we laughed internally, calling it the scar, ” said Dot Lischick, General Manager of the World Arena. “If we tried painting the damage or replacing the panels, they would never match the rest of building, so we made a sign. It has turned out to be a great opportunity for us!”

Designed and built by The Sign Shop in Colorado Springs, the aluminum sign was attached to the building on Wednesday, March 17th. Sign Shop foreman Fred French said, "It was the largest, most elaborate sign we've done. It took over 100 hours to build from start to finish. The shop even purchased a roller to roll out the aluminum since it was such a large project.”

The new sign, patterned after a map of the world, is made of aluminum so that the weight load on the building is less. Each continent weighs approximately 180 lbs., total weight is approximately 1,000 lbs. The sign had to be slightly arched to fit the round shape of the building.

Fans around the world know that the adventurous Willie Nelson can sing just about anything—and with just about anyone he pleases. As he sees it, “The more songs you know, the more musicians you listen to, the more writers you hear, the better equipped you are to decide where you want to go next. That’s why I want to listen to everyone and everything and then decide which way I want to go. Then, of course, I might change my mind and go in an entirely different direction. But at least I have all these options.”

As a Nashville artist in the ‘60s, Nelson himself penned more than a few tunes that have arguably become American classics themselves, including “Crazy,” “Night Life” and the sublime “Funny How Time Slips Away.” But that was just the prologue for the iconoclastic singer-songwriter, who would redraw the borders of country music in the ‘70s after moving back to Texas and settling in the musical melting pot of Austin. Along with fellow traveler Waylon Jennings, Nelson was labeled the outlaw of the genre, but he was more visionary than rebel, especially with the way he attracted rock fans to take a closer look at country. He was celebrated for his work with buddies like Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson, but scaled even greater chart heights by singing, improbably enough, with Julio Iglesias (“To All the Girls I Loved Before”), as well as with his rendition of Elvis's "You Were Always on My Mind" which took the number one position on the country chart and Top Five on the pop charts in the early eighties. Along with Marsalis, recent cohorts have included Western swing band Asleep at the Wheel and reggae icon Ziggy Marley.

Emerson, Lake and Palmer are known for such 70’s rock hits as "Lucky Man," "From The Beginning," "Karn Evil 9: 1st Impression - Part 2" and "I Believe In Father Christmas.”The two-man show with keyboard legend Keith Emerson and the famed voice and guitars of Greg Lake is an intimate "unplugged" prelude to the highly anticipated reunion of Emerson Lake and Palmer at the High Voltage Festival in July, 2010 in the UK. His most recent incarnation is the movie “Bait Shop,” co-starring Billy Ray Cyrus. Engvall plays a small town bait shop owner that enters a high profile fishing tournament in an attempt to raise money for his floundering business. Other big screen credits include “Delta Farce” and “Blue Collar Comedy Tour, The Movie.”

Among a long list of accolades, Engvall secured his place in history with the TBS series “The Bill Engvall Show.” This family comedy debuted in 2007 to 3.9 million viewers, securing a place among ad supported cable’s Top 3 sitcom telecasts of all time.

ABOUT MIKE MELTON (6:00 PM): Mike Melton received his first guitar as a Christmas present when he was 8-years-old. Shortly thereafter he began guitar lessons with John McDaniel of Graner Music – who now tours with Zoso, the premier Led Zeppelin tribute band in the country, in the role of Jimmy Page. Through these early lessons Mike gained a strong love for the instrument – it was not uncommon for him to play his guitar 4 or 5 hours straight. At age 14 he began studying classical guitar with Wayne Hammerstadt.

Melton enjoys playing improvisational jazz at the Acid Jazz Jam in Manitou Springs with such well known musicians as Kim Stone (bassist for The Rippingtons) and Mike Reese. Melton has also performed classical guitar at UCCS, as well as playing with an improvisational jazz group. Currently he performs classical guitar at the R & R Coffee Café in Black Forest.

A 2007 graduate of Lewis-Palmer High School, Monument,Colo., Melton currently attends UCCS with a major in psychology and a minor in music.

ABOUT VERONIKA STRING QUARTET (6:45 PM): In 2010 the Veronika String Quartet is celebrating the 20th anniversary of playing music together and the 10th anniversary at the Colorado State University.For their program, they plan to play Four, for Tango by Piazzolla, Chrysanthemum by Puccini, Nice work if you can get it by Gershwin, Lento from Dvorak’s American Quartet and Polka by Shostakovich.

ABOUT PHIL VOLAN & JOLEEN BELL (7:15 PM): Phil Volan and Joleen Bell play beautifully crafted original compositions and covers for mainly finger style guitar and vocals. The duo began in 2003 with a mutual love of acoustic music and share a rich musical past. The Black Rose Newsletter's reviewer Stew Levitt describes Phil and Joleen's playing on they're instrumental CD of duets: "Starting with the opening harmonics of “Carousel,” each guitar teases, withdraws and pursues each other like two children on an afternoon outing. This is acoustic guitar at its best." In 2002, Phil earned 2nd place at the prestigious National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship in Winfield, Kan. Phil and Joleen are widely versatile and perform at concerts, conventions, festivals, churches, restaurants, and the always-loved house concert.

ABOUT DANCE OVER ANAHEIM (6:45 PM): In December of 2007, Nell Maynard and Katie Porter decided to start writing songs together, and it was initially an acoustic project between the two. The duo recorded many tracks together soon after writing. Chris Iverson recorded piano for a couple of songs during the process. In April of 2009, the name "Dance Over Anaheim" was formed, and Chris officially joined soon after. After their first concert at the Loft on May 16th, 2009, bassist Eli Fredrickson joined the band. Adam Gilsdorf and Hunter Hovenga have drummed during concerts. They have played in many gigs this summer, opening for touring acts such as "We Shot The Moon", "Good Old War", and "One For The Team". All members are seniors in high school and have lived in Colorado Springs for many years. The band's sound could be described as an alternative, pop rock, piano driven feel, with many lead guitar and acoustic songs present.

Dance Over Anaheim Band members include: Katie Porter (Cheyenne Mountain HS) on guitar, keyboard, vocals and percussion, Nell Maynard (Cheyenne Mountain HS) on guitar, keyboard and vocals, Chris Iverson (Cheyenne Mountain HS) on piano, trombone and vocals; Eli Fredrickson (Palmer HS) on bass, and Hunter Hovenga (Cheyenne Mountain HS) on drums.

Dance Over Anaheim was recently a top-ten finalist in the SchoolJam USA teen battle of the bands competition. The nationwide contest, sponsored by NAMM, is designed to encourage teen bands across the United States to demonstrate their musical talents and enjoy the many proven benefits of making music. After an eventful year on the charts and on the road, the Zac Brown Band has proven that “overnight success” can be years in the making. New fans drawn by the irresistible hit singles, the awe-inspiring musicianship and dynamic live shows might have thought the Zac Brown Band emerged from nowhere. In fact, the band has paid its dues for years and put in its time for just this moment, it may have happened quickly, but it’s definitely built to last. Now, fueled by such honors and accolades as three GRAMMY Nominations, “Top New Vocal Group” from the Academy of Country Music Awards and “Breakthrough Video of the Year” from CMT and USA Weekend, the Zac Brown Band is preparing to move front-and-center in 2010. No question, the past year has been dizzying for the hardworking act. The Foundation was released on November 18, 2008, is now certified platinum by the RIAA. In the fall of 2009 Zac Brown Band successfully headlined the Breaking Ground Tour “For us to come into our own, we had to make it happen as a headliner” notes Brown. There’s no question that the road-tested band had the chops to pull it off. In addition to bassist John Hopkins, fiddler Jimmy De Martini, guitarist/organist Coy Bowles and drummer Chris Fryar, the band has added multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Clay Cook, rounding out the ZBB sound on guitar, vocals, organ, mandolin and pedal steel. Brown launched his Southern Ground record label in 2009 and signed Atlanta based artists Sonia Leigh, Levi Lowrey and Nic Cowan. In addition to the music, Brown also is launching a line of steak rubs and barbecue sauces under the Southern Ground label, and—in partnership with photographer Jeffrey Skillings and writer/bandmate Coy Bowles—is preparing the release of his first cookbook. As if all this weren’t enough, Brown is developing a charitable foundation to run a children’s camp (lending even more resonance to the title, The Foundation), which recently began clearing land for its planned site. Despite all the irons in the fire, Brown nonetheless calls his foundation and camp plans his “life’s work.” “Having the camp and giving back is important for me,” he says. “I’m very blessed to have what I have, and I know a lot of that’s on credit for what I do down the road. It’s very important for me to keep that in mind. I want to leave something behind that does some good after I’m gone.” While Brown focuses on doing good, his audiences will continue to focus on feeling good, as the band builds upon its grassroots following with media exposure and gigs in larger venues, such as the recent high-profile gig at the Bonnaroo festival. (A recent swing through the late-night television circuit—David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, Craig Ferguson and Jimmy Kimmel—has only accelerated the momentum.) And while audiences party, they’ll be doing well to keep up with the musicians onstage. “We laugh all the time,” Brown notes. “You’re either sleeping or up laughing and having a good time. Or we’re playing music. It’s better than I could have dreamed of.”

The band will be on the road well into the spring, touring in support of current EP 1969, and also in anticipation of their next full-length studio album. "This tour allows us to play the way we play in our backyards and really show the tradition of our Texican roots," Ringo Garza says about the Brotherhood tour. Special guests on the tour include Carrie Rodriguez.

About the tour: The Boys decided to add a chica into the mix after they watched Carrie Rodriguez break out with 2006's Seven Angels On A Bicycle, win the roots Music Association Award for Songwriter of the Year, and recently release her first live album, Live in Louisville.

In conjunction with the tour the band also wants to give back to their fans with the Los Lonely Boys Local Heroes Contest. The contest encourages fans to nominate "local heroes" – people who act above and beyond their normal call of duty to better their communities – who they believe deserve special recognition for the help they provide. Fans can submit a short description of why their local hero should win at the contest website (http://www.loslonelyboys.com/localhero), and winners will receive four tickets to a Los Lonely Boys show, one Limited Edition Commemorative Coin, and honors in a Coin Presentation Ceremony on stage at the show they attend. Winners will also be announced on the band's Facebook page. The Local Heroes Contest will run concurrently with the Acoustic Brotherhood tour, with a winner in every city the tour hits. Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale

2009 Holiday Performance

The Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale’s holiday concert ‘Tis the Season-Making Spirits Bright will be presented at the Pikes Peak Center on Sunday, December 6 at 3:00 p.m. All four of the Chorale’s choirs will participate, along with special guests, the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony, and dancers from the Ballet Society of Colorado Springs. In all, almost 300 of the region’s most talented young people will combine voices, instruments and dance for a concert experience that will be the perfect kick off for the holiday season. Tickets are $10 to $18 and are available at the Pikes Peak Center Box Office, 520-SHOW. Family Packages are available for $18 & $35.

The concert will include a special tribute to our co-founder and newly-named Conductor Emeritus Robert Crowder. Mr. Crowder directed the Children’s Chorale from it’s beginning in 1977 until a serious accident in the spring of 2008 forced him to cut back on his activities. He continues to play an important part in the Children’s Chorale as an advisor and musical arranger, not to mention the inspiration he brings as he continues to work his way back from critical injuries. Mr. Crowder will officially be named Director Emeritus at this concert, and will be honored through song by current & past singers of the Children’s Chorale.

The holiday season is always busy for the Children’s Chorale, starting with performances in the Colorado Springs Philharmonic’s Nutcracker (November 27-29), and continuing through December with performances in the Broadmoor Christmas shows. Ensembles from the Chorale will also participate in performances with the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony, Chamber Orchestra of the Springs at Glen Eyrie, and in the Christmas celebrations at the Pikes Peak Center with the First Presbyterian Church choir and orchestra, and again with the Colorado Springs Philharmonic for their popular Christmas show Christmas Classics.

Now in its 33rd season, the Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale includes over 150 of the region’s most dedicated and hardworking young people, in grades 2 – high school. These young singers are selected by audition and begin in the Chorale’s preparatory choir. Through an evaluation process, they have the opportunity to move up into the concert and touring choirs. The touring choirs travel nationally and internationally and have toured to Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Eastern Europe, and the UK, as well as many locations here in the U.S. The Children’s Chorale’s next auditions will be held January 4th – 7th for singers in grades 2 - 6. The Colorado Springs Chorale Decks the Hall

The Colorado Springs Chorale proudly announces the 23rd annual performance of its Christmas family favorite, Deck the Hall, The Best Way to Celebrate Christmas, (Best of the Springs, The Gazette) Friday, December 11, 2009, 7:30 p.m., at the Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts.

There is no music which evokes the spirit of Christmas more than the combined voices of a large chorus. The Colorado Springs Chorale’s 120 singers will bring joy to your season by presenting much loved favorites including carols, traditional choral seasonal pieces, and fresh arrangements of comfortably familiar standards.

The Chorale opens with a contemporary piece, Noe! Noe!, written by Mack Wilberg for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, then performs The Shepherd’s Chorus from Menotti’s Christmas favorite, “Amahl and the Night Visitors”. To recall Christmas’s past, the Chorale will sing carols such as God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, The First Noel, and Hark the Herald Angels Sing. In the Chorale’s now familiar “concert within a concert” will be Handel’s Dettingen Te Deum (excerpts) written for Westminster Abbey. Back for an encore because of its past popularity will be Craig Courtney’s A Musicological Journey Through the Twelve Days of Christmas, presenting the Twelve Days in many different historical and geographical musical styles and narrated by Theatreworks well known artistic director, Murray Ross. This year’s special guests will be the Brass Ensemble of the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony under the direction of Gary Nicholson, performing singly and then joining the Chorale and the audience in the Chorale’s traditional sing-a-longs. Add to this Santa and Mrs. Claus in the lobby, decorations, spectacular lighting and the accomplished accompaniment of Daniel S. Brink, pianist and Edmund Ladouceur, organist, for a very festive Christmas celebration.

Ticket prices range from $16 to $49, with two dollar per ticket discounts for seniors, military, students and accompanied children. Four dollar discounts per ticket for groups of ten or more are available for selected seating areas. “It-Takes-Five” teen discounts are also honored.

The Showcase at Studio Bee series returns this week with Tom Taylor and The Needlewood Orchestra and Jason Bennett performing on November 12, 6:00 PM in Studio Bee at the Pikes Peak Center, 190 S. Cascade Ave., in Colorado Springs. This concert is free (no ticket required) and open to the public. Photos of both bands are attached to this email as well as available bios. MP3 files of the bands' songs are available upon request. We have also selected the next round of artists to participate in the Showcase - they are listed below.

The Showcase at Studio Bee highlights the best of local artists performing original music. The November 12 concert is part of this monthly concert series presented free of charge to the public in collaboration with KRCC, COPPeR, the Independent, the Gazette and the Pikes Peak Center. All artists included in the Showcase are homegrown talent from El Paso, Teller and Pueblo counties, have produced an album and write their own music.

ABOUT TOM TAYLOR AND THE NEEDLEWOOD ORCHESTRA (6:00 PM): Tom Taylor is an internationally known guitarist, composer and recording artist, and he is the jazz guitar instructor at Colorado College. His music is a hybrid of jazz, classical and rock and even includes a dash of blues and bluegrass. His new CD, Home, features the world-renowned Turtle Island String Quartet.

Tom is one of the winners of Musician Magazine's "Best Unsigned Band" contest. His winning entry, "Aubade," from his CD The Crossing is described as "the hardest tune I ever had to record" by mandolin virtuoso David Grisman. The Crossing also features the Kronos Quartet.

Tom premiered a full orchestral arrangement of "Big Basin Breakdown" from The Crossing in Europe. It received a five-minute standing ovation at the famed Hercules and Prinzregenten theatres in Munich.

Tom’s current ensemble is the Needlewood Orchestra, which features the following musicians:

Phil Allen (valve trombone) recently moved here from the San Francisco area, where he wrote for and played with the CSM Monday Night Band, the Interplay Trio, and the Collective West Jazz Orchestra. He has written for and played with the Springs Contemporary Jazz Band and contributed an arrangement to the Air Force Falconaires.

Marc Neihof (acoustic and electric basses) has recently joined the faculty of Colorado College. He performs in the Colorado Springs Philharmonic and is sought out by the finest jazz and classical musicians in Colorado for recording projects and performances. His peripatetic wanderings have found him jamming with musicians across Europe, China and India.

Mark Rose (saxophones and woodwinds) has taught at the Colorado College, University of Denver and Adams State College. Mark has recorded with Tom and with pianist/vocalist Ellyn Rucker, Steve Barta, Alan Joseph, Barbara Ernst, and the Boulder vocal group Rare Silk.

Lisa Smith (horn) has been a public school music teacher. Lisa was principal horn in Tom Wilson’s Chamber Orchestra of the Springs. She has performed with many other ensembles, including the New World Symphony and the Monument Hill Brass Quintet.

ABOUT JEREMY FACKNITZ (6:45 PM): Jeremy Facknitz didn't even pick up a guitar and begin writing songs until he was 18 years old. His aunt, a songwriter herself, passed down her old Yamaha acoustic to Jeremy as Christmas gift. Within a few short months, the Michigan native found himself competing in local talent shows and jamming in various basement bands. In 1997 he made the trek upstairs and joined the Detroit-based band 'The Ottomans' (2001 Best New Alternative Band, Detroit Music Awards). Jeremy played bass guitar in the project, was the main music contributor to the groups compositions. After 'The Ottomans' parted ways in 2002, Jeremy and brother Jarod formed under the moniker 'Standing Room Only' and shared their not-so-subtle mix of deadly serious and comedic songs with intimate coffee shop gatherings throughout the mid-west. Since going solo in September 2003, Jeremy has lived and played all over the United States. Having completed U.S. mini-tours in 2006 and 2008, plans are underway for a 2009 CD release tour to support his new album, "Music From The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack". Jeremy is currently living in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he's performing and teaching lessons. Colin Mochrie began his improv career when he was first introduced to Ryan Stiles by a

friend and the two teamed up. Shortly after doing Expo 86, Colin moved to Toronto. There, he auditioned for The Second City (a famous North American comedy theater), where Stiles was working at the time. Mochrie worked in The Second City for three years.

Mochries first appearance on Whose Line is it Anyway, the British version, was in 1991. His role on the American Whose Line got off to a rocky start when ABC wanted to drop Mochrie because they thought the comedian looked too old and not hip enough. Thankfully those involved in the show held their ground, and ABC was smart enough to see that talent and creativity were more important than hip and the fans agreed, making Mochrie a popular mainstay on the American Whose Line stage.

Lately Mochrie has been as busy as ever. He has been busy appearing in commercials as the Nabisco Snack Fairy, and has been heavily involved in independent and small movie projects including in The Movie Co-op, which is a Canadian venture to help produce great Canadian movies funded by and run by the artists themselves.

Brad Sherwood was a regular cast member on ABCs Whose Line Is It Anyway? and was a regular on the British version on Comedy Central as well. His credits include The Drew Carey Show, The Green Screen Show, over 100 appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, numerous appearances on VH-1s I Love The 80s & 90s, and guest hosting Talk Soup.

Brads other past credits include a season on LA Law, To Tell The Truth, The Newz, and hosting The New Dating Game.

US Womens National Team begins practice for Qwest

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The 2009-10 U.S. Women's National Team, fresh off winning the Hockey Canada Cup, has returned to the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn., and will conduct its first practice in preparation for the 10-game Qwest Tour today at 10 a.m. CT at the Schwan Super Rink.

The Qwest Tour kicks off in St. Paul, Minn., on Sept. 25 and ends just prior to the start of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. The US Women's National Team will play Finland Feb. 4 at the World Arena. Tickets are now on sale.

To provide the ultimate interactive fan experience, Qwest today launched Qwest All Access, a website that features an online, behind-the-scenes video series from U.S. teammates Erika Lawler (Fitchburg, Mass.), three-time member of the U.S. Women's National Team, and Angela Ruggiero (Simi Valley, Calif.), three-time Olympic medalist.

FREE CONCERT: Low Down High and The Mitguards kick off the next Showcase at Studio Bee series Sept. 17

The Showcase at Studio Bee series kicks off once again for the 2009-2010 season with local favorites Low Down High and The Mitguards, starting at 6 PM Sept. 17 at Studio Bee inside of the Pikes Peak Center, 190 S. The Showcase at Studio Bee highlights the best of local artists performing original music. The September 17 concert is part of this monthly concert series presented in collaboration with KRCC, COPPeR, the Independent, the Gazette   and the Pikes Peak Center. All artists included in the Showcase are homegrown talent from El Paso, Teller and Pueblo counties, have produced an album and write their own music.

Meet The Class of 2009 – Colorado College Ice Hockey Legend Doug Palazzari

The Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame will welcome the Class of 2009 for induction on Tuesday, November 10, at the Colorado Springs World Arena, with activities starting at 6:00 p.m. with a reception and blue-chip sports silent auction. The dinner and program will begin at 7:00.

Ice hockey oldtimers in Colorado Springs say that Doug Palazzari is the greatest Tiger ever to don the Colorado College jersey for a program that is one of the nation’s best. A native of the Minnesota Iron Range hockey hotbed, Eveleth, he grew up in a hockey-rich family. His dad, Aldo, played for the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins and taught his son the game.

At Colorado College from 1970-74, the short, powerful athlete was one of the most feared scorers in the nation, blistering the nets for 95 goals, 228 points and 133 assists. He was a two-time All-American and WCHA MVP for the Tigers, playing on teams that were not as accomplished as later CC powerhouses.

He signed with the St. Louis Blues after graduation from CC, playing in 108 NHL games and scoring 18 goals over his NHL stints. His greatest impact came while playing for the Salt Lake City Golden Eagles of the Central Hockey league, the top farm club of the Blues, between 1977-1982, where he was twice named the league’s MVP and named as the CHL’s all-time greatest player in 1997.

The Tiger great served as an assistant coach at his alma mater for six seasons (1985-91) and was named to the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame and the Colorado College Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000. USA Hockey named him as the organization’s executive director in 1999, and he served the National Governing Body in that capacity until 2005.

The other inductees are sports greats, too. Philadelphia Phillies’ manager Charlie Manuel wears a World Series championship ring, but he also led the 1992 Colorado Springs Sky Sox to the Pacific Coast League title. Jim Hartman is unmatched in success when it comes to producing great prep football teams with three state titles. The Broadmoor Skating Club has a reputation for success unmatched around the world. CU Track and Field All-American Jim Miller was one of the nation's greatest hurdlers. And the state has never produced a female soccer player quite like former Air Academy High and Duke star Andi Melde Hooks.

The Sports Hall of Fame is presented for the Colorado Springs Sports Corporation by The Gazette and American National Bank.

La Bohème and The Magic Flute herald Opera Theatre’s 2009-2010 Season

Three free public presentations will lead to the Bohème performances

For the first time in its history, Opera Theatre of the Rockies presents a season in which it will be a part of two productions in the spacious confines of Southern Colorado’s premier concert venue, The Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts. On Sat. Sept. 26 at 8 pm and Sun. Sept. 27 at 2:30 pm, Opera Theatre will join the Colorado Springs Chorale as guest artists to open the season for the Colorado Springs Philharmonic Orchestra. The entire performance will be given over to a semi-staged concert version of Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème and will be conducted by the Philharmonic’s Music Director, Lawrence Leighton Smith. Then on Sat. Feb. 27 at 7:30 pm and Sun. Feb. 28 at 3 pm, Opera Theatre will present fully-staged performances of Mozart’s final opera, The Magic Flute.

“We are very clear why we are in this business,” said Opera Theatre’s Founder and Artistic Director Martile Rowland. “When we began our organization in 1998, the goal was to provide the exceptional training and invaluable experience young aspiring opera singers must receive to launch successful careers. As the regional artistic landscape altered in the new millennium, we added the mission to cultivate the operatic art in Southern Colorado. In this, our 12th season, I believe that we are going to reach more people than ever while providing our core group of performers tremendous stage experience.”

This will be the second time Opera Theatre will join the Philharmonic as a guest artist. In the orchestra’s debut season in 2003, A Night at the Opera was huge audience and critical success. This performance marks the first time that the orchestra’s Executive Director, Nathan Newbrough, has played a part in choosing a season opener. “I think the hardest part was picking the opera,” he said. “Once we settled on Bohème, it was an obvious thing to call Martile Rowland, (Colorado Springs Chorale Artistic Director and Conductor) Donald Jenkins and (Opera Theatre Music Director and Chorale Associate Music Director) Daniel Brink as collaborators. They are three of the sharpest, most creative minds we know of, and it’s been a huge pleasure for the Philharmonic to partner with them. Puccini’s masterpiece is the biggest artistic statement of the Philharmonic season, and we couldn’t be in better hands.”

Conductors Smith and Jenkins along with Rowland and Brink were presented with the task of casting the principals for Bohème. They chose Soprano Désirée Dodson a marquee performer for Opera Theatre, last seen as Micaëla in 2008’s Carmen, as Mimi. Tenor Yang Bo, who is in Boulder as a performing artist with Colorado University’s opera program, will perform Rodolfo, Mimi’s new-found love and will be making his Colorado Springs debut.

Soprano Tina Lovejoy, a Colorado-based artist who has a growing success on the national and international operatic scene, makes her Opera Theatre/Colorado Springs Philharmonic debut as the coquettish Musetta and Baritone Thomas Eric Angerhofer is Musetta’s jealous lover Marcello. He is also making his Colorado Springs debut. Other featured roles are filled by two Opera Theatre stalwarts, Baritone Bradley Thompson as Shaunard and Bass Arthur Van Dyck in the comic roles of Benoit and Alcindoro. Bass Wu Wei is Colline and will be making his Philharmonic and Opera Theatre debut.

La Bohème stage presentation will arise from the shared efforts of Rowland and Jenkins. Brink, who works for both Opera Theatre and the Chorale, will be the musical coach for the principals. Opera Theatre continues its commitment toward audience education by offering three presentations leading up to the performances of La Bohème. After assisting the Philharmonic in the opening of their 2009-2010 season, Opera Theatre will turn its attention to one of the most beloved operas ever written. Die Zauberflöte, the German title of Mozart’s The Magic Flute, is renowned for providing an unequaled operatic entertainment that appeals to viewers of all ages. Its blend of comedy, fantasy, romance and spirituality made it an instant operatic legend, a position it has not relinquished since its premiere in 1791. It was the final success is the remarkable career of its composer, who died shortly after its debut.

The production will feature a cast and chorus comprised of the area’s best regional talent, a professional orchestra, costumes, set and lighting. “I can promise that our “Flute” will be of superb quality and of memorable presentation,” said Rowland.
